An authentic late 19th century English brass-bound mahogany writing slope, also known as a travel desk, crafted with traditional construction and period detailing. This example reflects the functionality and refined craftsmanship typical of Victorian-era portable writing boxes. The exterior is constructed from richly toned mahogany, reinforced with brass banding at the edges for durability and visual contrast. The rectangular form opens to reveal a paneled writing surface, traditionally used for correspondence while traveling. The interior retains its original layout, including compartments for writing implements and ink storage. Beneath the sloped writing panels are concealed storage sections on both sides, designed for organizing documents and personal effects. The interior fittings include pen trays and ink receptacles, with one original glass inkwell still present. The lock plate is stamped with a “VR” monogram beneath a crown, denoting the reign of Queen Victoria (Victoria Regina), while the hinges are marked “PM & Co.” for Paul Moore and Company, a known English maker.
